Coronavirus: Populations, and Cumulative and Per Capita Case and Death Stats

Question: Why are the cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in China so much lower per million population than the U.S.? Has China done a much better job than the U.S. in protecting its citizens? Are China’s reported number of cases artificially low? Are the Chinese people less susceptible to the coronavirus? Is a greater percentage of the Chinese population living in rural areas that give them less access to well traveled people? Is the Chinese government using different criteria for country cases than the U.S.?
